ASPIRE Index

A research-based self-assessment tool to help legal professionals understand and enhance their performance and wellbeing at work.

About the ASPIRE Index

The ASPIRE Index is designed to help legal professionals understand and enhance both their performance and wellbeing at work. This research-based tool explores five key factors that contribute to high performance and thriving in legal practice, and will provide you with personalised insights and practical strategies for your interest.

Research purpose

Your participation in this self-assessment contributes to important research on the drivers of professional performance and wellbeing in the legal sector. Your anonymous response will help us understand patterns of high performance and thriving in legal practice, ultimately supporting the development of better support systems and performance strategies for legal professionals.

Understanding the five ASPIRE factors

[A]utonomy and Intrinsic Drive

High Autonomy and Intrinsic Drive are associated with greater productivity, job satisfaction, resilience, and sustained engagement throughout your career. This factor explores your sense of ownership, self-direction, and internal motivation at work.

Pro[S]ocial Orientation

Strong prosocial skills enhance leadership effectiveness, team productivity, and create more positive work environments. This factor looks at your orientation towards supporting colleagues, building positive relationships, and contributing to team success.

[P]urpose and Values Alignment

When your professional activities connect with your deeper purpose, you're more likely to find fulfilment, maintain motivation during challenging times, and perform at your best. This factor explores how well your work aligns with your personal values and sense of meaning.

[I]nteroceptive Awareness and Self-Regulation

Greater body awareness and emotional regulation contribute to better decision-making, sustained performance, and leadership presence. This factor explores your awareness of physical and emotional states and your ability to manage stress responses effectively.

[R]esilience and Long-Term [E]ngagement

Resilience helps support long-term career satisfaction and productivity, and assists in preventing burnout in demanding professional environments. This factor looks at how quickly you bounce forward through challenges, maintain perspective during stress, and sustain motivation over time.

Mental health considerations

ASPIRE Index explores topics related to stress, resilience, self-regulation and professional challenges that may touch on mental health and behavioural themes. While the content is designed to be supportive and constructive, some questions may prompt reflection on personal experiences.

If you are currently experiencing distress or serious mental health concerns, we strongly encourage you to seek professional support before or instead of completing the assessment. If you experience distress while completing the assessment, we encourage you to end your session and advise your program co-ordinator and/or seek support using one of the options outlined below.

Remember: seeking professional support is a sign of strength and self-care, not weakness.
